R.I.P. Investigator Mahaffey

Rockdale County Sheriff’s Investigator Brian Lamar Mahaffey was shot and killed in the line of duty on Saturday, May 8, 2010 while serving a search and arrest warrant.

On May 8, Investigators with the Narcotics and Vice Unit, along with Investigators with the Criminal Investigations Unit, and several other deputies were serving a search and arrest warrant on a rape, kidnapping and aggravated assault suspect. The suspect was armed and hiding in a closet where he opened fire on Investigator Mahaffey and other deputies from a bedroom closet. Although Mahaffey was wearing his body armor, he was hit once in the arm and a second shot struck under his vest. He was fatally wounded by the suspect. Rockdale County Sheriff’s Deputies and Investigators returned fire killing the suspect.

Investigator Mahaffey had been with the Sheriff’s Office for 5 years and began his career as a Detention Deputy. He was transferred to the Uniform Patrol Division in 2007, and then to the Criminal Investigations Unit and assigned to the Narcotics and Vice Unit in 2009.

He is survived by his Wife Diana, his two-year old son Trenton, and his two and ½ month old daughter Anniston. Brian was killed one day after his 28th birthday. He was a faithful Deputy, husband, father, son and brother, and will never be forgotten by our department. His badge number 2330 has been retired by the department.
