In the final game of the Young Stars Tournament, the Winnipeg Jets beat the Vancouver Canucks 2-0.
Some familiar names helped put the Jets on top with the only goal they would need. 8:24 into the first period, Scheifele dished the puck behind the net to Jason Gregoire who wrapped the puck around to the front of Karel St. Laurent’s net. Scheifele retrieved a rebound, got a shot off, before it fell to Shayne Wiebe who banked the puck into the Canucks goal, giving the Jets a 1-0 lead.
An insurance goal was added in the third period by this year's number one draft pick for the Jets. At 11:36 into the third period, Mark Scheifele took possession of the puck after a Canucks Turnover. Sitting in the high slot, Scheifele skated towards the Canucks net and fired a shot past Karel St. Laurent, giving the Jets a 2-0 lead.
In fact, many of the stars from the first game shined bright enough to earn the three stars of the game.
1.Shayne Wiebe – the Brandon native scored the opening goal, and was flying all over the ice.
2.Mark Scheiefele – scored a third period goal, helped set up the first goal of the game.
3.Jason Gregoire – the most reliable forward for the Winnipeg Jets all tournament long continued his strong play.
A glance at the box score shows a fairly disciplined game as the Jets only had 3 non-coincideing penalties.
The Canucks committed 5 penalties (not counting a roughing/unsportsmanlike strike against both teams in the third). But the Jets were not able to capitalize on any of their powerplays.
What maybe the most impressive stat is the shots on goal. 18 for Vancouver the whole game compared with 35 for Winnipeg. That's a telling number as it appears Winnipeg had control over much of the game. 2011 Memorial Cup winning goaltender Karel St. Laurent manned the nets for the Vancouver squad. The Jets split the time between netminders Edward Pasquale and Chris Carrozzi almost evenly. Both stopped 9 out of 9 shots with Pasquale credited with the win. Pasquale did not allow anything to get behind him the entire tourney.
Here is a look at highlights from the game.
With that out of the way, the Jets can start concentrating on training camp. And there are a number of questions being raised early, ranging from Buff's weight gain to Pavelec in the nets, to the lack of defense the team showed last year in Atlanta.
There are also clear warnings from a Winnipeg newpaper that the town is driven on results. Win or face the wrath.
Says Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press:
"Winnipeggers want to meet and greet and cheer you on. But they also have demands and expectations that will have to be met.
I'm sorry to say, but it's true, the good people of Winnipeg can turn on a team like a cat on a dog. One minute it's all purr, purr, meow and the next it's fangs bared and claws a-scratching."
Good luck with that Jets.
