Pre and Post Game Festivites for Jets Opener

The Winnipeg Jets have annonced that Blue Rodeo, a Canadian recording group, will highlight a party that begins before the game and concludes well after at The Forks in Winnipeg.

The Forks is a major tourist attraction in Winnipeg and hot spot for locals. The most notable landmark of Winnipeg can be found here, the Esplanade Riel, seen below.

Also included at The Forks is a major shopping area, skate park, and theater.

Blue Rodeo has played at the Vancouver Olympics and had their music featured in a few Hollywood productions. Below is a video for (what I think) is one of their more famous songs.

The event does cost money ($35) and is only for those 18 and older. This is good news for a few reasons (assuming they meet my expectations).

First, if the money is used towards security purposes, then it is well justified. We don't want a repeat of what happened in Vancouver. A large reason those riots happened was a lack of police presence. While the Jets game (win or lose) will be a celebratory event for the city, people tend to go a little wild while celebrating.

Since the event is only for those 18+, I would assume there is some sort of security check point to monitor for that. These check points will also act as points for other suspicious activity or individuals, whether they are specifically looking for that or not.

The selling of tickets is also a good idea because you will know exactly how many people will be there. You can then limit the number before it gets out of control and too large to manage.

Finally, the area is apparently pretty big and used to holding large events.

There has to be a plan for overflow though. People will find a place and the police must be ready to respond. Again, this is going to be more of a fun party than a bitter defeat than the Vancouver situation, but a similar situation can be expected.

Only 16 days till the puck drops in Winnipeg.

And only about 8 months until the Jets are eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch out of the Stanley Cup...
