Jets Shut Out by Oilers in YST, Zach's Back!

Oilers goaltender Tyler Bunz was definately the best player on the ice as the Jets suffered a 2-0 loss in the Young Stars Tournament. He stopped 23 shots. The only one that got behind him was knocked in by Carl Klingberg, but was disallowed after review because it was knocked in by a high stick.

Jason Gregoire had his second solid effort of the tournament, creating a number of quality chances for the Jets with four shots on goal, and playing a solid defensive game. He was awarded the third star of the game with the first gong to Bunz and the second to Chase Schaber who scored the opening goal for Edmonton.

This game was cleaner than the first in terms of penalties. There were still two fights, but overall there were only 4 penalties called against the Jets (ignoring any coincidental penalties, such as roughing and fighting).

One bad one was committed by Eric ODell at 7:34 in the first for unsportmanlike conduct for instigating a fight after teammate Shayne Wiebe and Oiler Ryan Martindale after the two had a collision on the ice. ODell started a scrap with Martindale for the hit. The two others were called for roughing while Edmonton went on the powerplay with ODell's additional unsportsman penalty. The Oilers capitalized on the powerplay.

This is the kind of penalty you should not be taking during this tryout period. Yeah, you were going to the defense of your teammate, but in the wrong way. You created an odd-man advantage for the opposition and they got an insurance goal out of it. And that was not the only penalty he got. He totalled 6 PIM including an additional hooking call.

Now, I say the penalties were not as bad, but that's compared to the last game and how many penalities they committed (which was still not too many). But the Oilers only had two independant penalties. The Jets are still without a powerplay goal in this tourney. Some of the first game highlight reel makers (Scheifele) didn't have as much of an impact with just 2 shots on goal.

I got to see much more of this game and liked what I saw. If you want to watch some highlights, look right here. Highlights from the 4-0 win over the Sharks in the YST are here.

In other news, Zach Bogosian has resigned with the franchise after becoming a restricted free agent.

The popular defenceman signed his $5 million, two-year deal Wednesday. Bogosian was a restricted free agent who waited all summer to get a new contract. He arrived in Winnipeg earlier this week to participate in informal workouts with his teammates and told reporters he was eager to officially join the Jets.

By the way, I found that Americans and Canadians do things differently in terms of spelling. American articles refer to defensemen. Canadian articles say defencemen. I find myself now going back and forth between the two. So sorry if that's confusing!
